I’ve just been thinking this morning about how grateful I am to be cultivating this beautiful community here on Substack. Every time you share my posts, comment, or connect with me in some way truly feeds my soul. I know that may sound dramatic, but I think when you’re doing something creative and people get it, and you find like-minded others, it just makes what you’re doing that much better. So I’m sitting here smiling and loving this space I’ve found myself in.
This week’s simple things is more about the little things I’ve noticed this week (and isn’t that the point?) as well as a few posts I’ve loved. Hope you enjoy…
I’m not sure about you, but I am never fully ready for when the heat of summer sets in. Despite growing up in Florida, when I got home from our trip and was met with 100% humidity and temperatures in the low 90s, it took me a minute to adjust. I am trying to embrace the sunny summer, but honestly just spend most of my time dreaming about autumn’s embrace. While I know that colder days are a few months out, I am instead looking at the heat as something to become one with and trying to reframe my thought process from yelling, “It’s so freaking hot out here” every day to “Oh what a beautiful day where the sun is out and all the animals are roaming and the Earth is saying hello”. It’s hard, I’m telling ya. But I’m working on it.
Maverick has a new obsession movie and it’s my least favorite so far, Trolls. I mean, it’s cute and all, but I am not loving it day in and day out as I did, say, Toy Story. This morning, though, I convinced her to watch Moana and as I was sitting with her, I almost started to tear up at this specific scene. Moana finds the space where all the boats of her ancestors were hidden. She bangs on the drum and suddenly sees the vision of her ancestors sailing through the water to find the island she now calls home. It was so beautiful, the men and women were sailing through the sea, the children were at the mamas’ feet, and there was such a strong connection between them all. I’ve been reading a ton about our ancestral ways of life and this was a beautiful representation of one of those ways. I’m not sure if this makes any sense, but I thought it was pretty magical.
I will confidently declare myself as a level above clueless when it comes to Tarot, but something just keeps drawing me back into its world. I love the cards and what they mean, so I have begun trying to craft a daily (or mostly daily) practice of pulling cards and feeling what they mean to me. I’ve been using this deck I bought years ago, The Wild Unknown, and it’s been really fun. Do you work with tarot?
I loved this thought-provoking post from Claire at
this week, and the comments that ensued below it. It really made me think about my own relationship with social media and what I’ve been getting ‘wrong’ these days.I love Kate from
and her posts because she always mixes science with holistic health, and she has the education to back it up. This post about Forest Bathing was a favorite of mine, and a must-read if you’re desiring to spend more time out in nature these days.
And there you have it! I’d love to know what magically mundane thing you’ve experienced this week that has brought you joy.
On tarot - yes but I’ve moved away from it towards lighter/ intuitive/ creative decks now. On movies for toddlers - I’m not afraid to admit that Luna wears headphones and watches them on the family iPad! 💜🙌🏻
Enjoying burritos lately: a breakfast burrito yesterday, and a veggie burrito today.
I have yet to "connect" with a Tarot deck, but I use several oracle decks. About to read for July and post it on YouTube. My favorite deck is called "Cat Wisdom" and features a deck of the most adorable cats and kittens. It's from an Australian publishing house, if I recall correctly.
Social media? Haven't been since early 2020 with Instagram. Might return in due time to revamp and update my account there, but don't really feel a huge pull to do so at the moment...
