I feel like I can finally take a deep breath. The tourists are leaving, we’ve had a few mornings of not quite-as-hot weather, and I’ve been getting all my ducks in a row at home. This week seems to have begun trending towards Autumn in energy, and I love it. I’ve also had some anxiety flare-ups this week, which is typical for me in transitional times of the year. I spoke with Matt about it yesterday and am feeling much better today. But other than that, we’ve been soaking up lots of time together as a family, getting in pool time almost every day, and sorting our house after the chaos of summer. It feels so good to be settling in for autumn (even though it’s still a few months out for us, weather-wise). Are you feeling autumn creep up yet? How’s that feeling for you?
Anyway, after skipping last week, I’m back with a ‘simple things’ post for you! Just a few things I’ve been enjoying about this week. Here we go…
Every once in a while, I put my sourdough starter, Ethel, in the fridge for a while. I knew we had a lot of travel this summer, so into hibernation she went. I don’t know why I am the way I am, but when something needs to be done, I get so panicked about actually doing it. So I’ve been ignoring that she’s in there and needs to be fed for the last few weeks. Until the day before yesterday! I finally decided to pull her out and she’s looking very bubbly and happy today, so it might be time to do some baking.
Is there a term for spring cleaning in the fall? Autumn cleaning? The last week or so we’ve been in high gear over here cleaning and tidying. Matt got a storage unit for some of his video games and such (he collects lots of video game related things) so I took the opportunity to take up some of that space with my winter clothes that I don’t need yet. Overall, it’s been nice to have more space in our little house and I’m planning on turning my dumping ground room into an office for me (until we either move out or Maverick needs it as a bedroom).
Maverick has been so much fun this week. Having a toddler is complete chaos because sometimes she just cries about everything for seemingly no reason and other times she’s just hilarious and constantly learning new things. It’s just so cool to watch something you made grow into her own little being. I’m so in awe of her, and I’m beyond proud to be her mom.
I had my first photography snafu this week and laughed about it so hard for days. I went to a popular state park in our area to photograph a family and texted them when I got there that I was waiting at the picnic benches. I knew it was a couple, her dad, two kids aged 1 and 2, and a sister. Well, a grandpa-aged man pulls up with an older sister and two kids, and says, “Are you the photography lady?” I said, “Yes I am!”. He told me the rest of the group was on their way. So we began walking down to the beach and chatting. Then, when the rest of the group got there I asked which one of them was Kaley (the girl who I’d been talking to), and they said, “Oh you mean, Caroline?” I was like, “No. Pretty sure her name was Kaley.” Then it hit me: I was about to photograph the wrong family! I said, “Wait, you’re not my family!” And they said, “You’re not our photographer?!” Thankfully, they thought it was hilarious, and at that exact moment, I got the text that Kaley and her family were at the picnic benches. I ended up seeing that family later on and laughing with them about it some more. I can only imagine what it would have been like had I actually taken their photos! SO funny.
I wrote about a typical “day in the life” this week, and the next day sweet
published a day in her life! We both have toddlers near the same age so it was SO fun reading about her DITL and what they get up to. I really love reading about others days, it truly is the magic in the mundane.
And there you have it! I’d love to know what magically mundane thing you’ve experienced this week that has brought you joy.
Yes, since I am living by my seasons it only makes sense to me that Autumn phase is about "letting go" and "purging" and about "winterizing". Ya know that urge on day 25-27 that has us on our hands and knees scrubbing the shower floor, hyper-focused on the shower scum, or ripping through our closet cause nothing fits right or feels right. It's a feeling of tying up loose ends in the Autumn of our lives.
I loved your funny story of almost photographing the wrong family. Never know what little quirks life is going to dish at us.
I think toddlers and pmdd have a lot in common. Haha.
I'm 100% on board with the autumn clean. A refresh every season would be great, honestly.
