Love it! Resiliency is definitely a gift of Motherhood. I used to Ski and haven’t for years, since way before Sophia... and I’m quite nervous about whether I will be able to pick it back up again ever... but I relate a lot to feeling weak as a child. I was the slowest in everything, not sporty, not athletic... it wasn’t until I started lifting weights and practising yoga that I started to feel stronger. You are a badass for getting back on the board, and your Mum is awesome for doing that! Lovely writing as always xxx

I honestly think it's like riding a bike. I was shocked by how fast I picked it up again, so I think you'll surprise yourself!

Yes!! I was on a very similar journey. It's so cool to see how far we've come.

I love this -' here’s to realizing that sometimes the most beautiful things come out of our hardest moments'. Amen!

I love the energy in this post Hunter, I could feel the slopes as you wrote. As someone who started skiing, terrified, aged 40+ I can resonate with your mum, and giving up with bad knees still aged 40+ I can resonate with your other half!

You're so right though, being a mum is bad-ass from the very start and we really are super-human - it's recognising it in ourselves that's the tricky bit... 🩵

Aw that's amazing, Sarah! So glad you got to have that little time doing it, but also recognized when your knees were done!

Definitely about recognizing it ourselves, for sure! It's something I struggle with but am reminded in moments like these.

I smiled all the way through. There is so much wisdom, joy, pride, deep-rooted (self)-love and a true zest for life (even the hard bits). I am applauding you and thanking you for making me root deeper into my inner strength too! ♥️

Motherhood doesn't allow you to quit...which to me is one of the most beautiful parts of it. There is no, "I'm too tired to do this or that" there is no, "I just don't feel like it".

It's a whole other beauty that your mom picked up snowboarding for you at age 40. I'm not much into winter sports but I am into being and remaining in shape so I can keep up with my 3 kids as they grow up and get into who knows what!

Yes! Absolutely. It is a really beautiful part, even if in the moment it feels so very hard. Haha

I know, now that I'm a mom myself I'm so grateful for her trying something completely new just to spend time with me. We have so many amazing memories together now too.

Aw yes, it'll be so exciting to see what your kids get into as they grow up!!

I love this. ❤️I am even older than you sitting at 51 , but I feel a new surge of energy. Maybe it’s my last chance to try something new and exciting. I love to hike and move my body on my yoga mat. They are the two practices that bring me the most joy. I want to be 90 doing the same things…maybe a tad slower. Congratulations on showing up for you. ❤️

My mom is turning 60 this year and still got out on the slopes, so anything is possible for you too! You've got plenty of time!! I love hiking and yoga as well, they are both great ways to connect to our inner selves! Thank you so much for your sweet comment, Blythe!

Yes! Learning something new as an adult (especially after becoming a mother) is so exhilarating! I felt this way when I learned to knit a year ago, and even though I'm still learning and sometimes struggling, I love it so much. It's made me want to learn more new things even when they may be difficult.

I had the same experience in high-school with running. I was terrible and terribly slow. I can remember always being the one walking well behind everyone else. And I was always the last to be picked for a team. I think, just like you said, it really effected how I viewed my perspective of myself. And actually, now that I've written that, maybe this ties into the other conversation we were having regarding imposter syndrome and feeling weird about sharing our writing IRL.

Anyway, lovely essay 🤍
